Occupational Therapist PRN Inpatient Rehab Unit (Main Campus)

Job Description and Responsibilities:

Texas Children's Hospital's 8-bed Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, scheduled to open late spring 2012, will provide acute inpatient rehab for children with impairments resulting from illness or injury. The interdisciplinary rehab care team will consist of nurses, occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, behavioral and neuropsychology, social workers, educational specialists, dieticians, child life specialists, recreation therapist, music and art therapists as well as a clinical care manager. The primary diagnosis and conditions served include brain injury, multiple trauma, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, spasticity, spinal cord injury and stroke as well as other disabling diseases and conditions.

The interdisciplinary team will create an individualized plan of care specific to each child and designed to promote mobility, communication, cognitive awareness, social skills and self-care with the intended goal of reintegration back to home, school and community.

Position Summary

Overview:
Plan, evaluate, organize and implement occupational therapy treatment programs in a developmentally and age appropriate manner for patients (0 - adulthood).

Responsibilities:
Complete patient evaluations and reassessments; develop an individualized plan of care based upon evaluation/reassessment findings; develop measurable long and short-term goals; perform patient care and related activities demonstrating advanced clinical competencies in an area of specialty (NICU, serial casting, advanced electrical stimulation, brachial plexus splinting, PT splinting, assistive technology, advanced aquatics, behavioral feeding and complex feeders, sensory integration, biodex evaluations and Ilizarov); communicate and collaborate with other members of the patient's interdisciplinary care team and coordinate treatment plan; monitor patient response to treatment intervention; recommend adaptive equipment; design and fabricate orthotic equipment/supplies and make recommendations on customized adaptive equipment (gait trainers, angle adjustable bath chairs, etc.); recommend termination of treatment when appropriate. Provide clinical support to assigned outpatient clinic or specialty program. Provide instruction/education to patients and families/caregivers. Document information in patient's medical record. Participate in staff and student development.

Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge and understanding of rehabilitative care of patients with acute and chronic conditions, a strong desire to work with children and knowledge of development from the ages of neonate to adulthood. Successful demonstration of the professional competencies and advanced specialty certification or equivalent (NDT, SIPT, pediatric specialty exam, advanced masters in pediatrics, craniosacral, aquatic certification, dual OT/PT degrees, NIDCAP certification, assistive technology certification). Must also be articulate, courteous and supportive in dealing with hospital, administrative and departmental personnel, patients and parents with the ability to honor confidentiality; have the ability to independently treat patients by developing and following the established therapy plan of care; demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills; utilize basic office equipment such as fax, copier and PC.

Education, Experience and License:
Degree in occupational therapy, current Texas OT license (temp license acceptable) and two (2) years pediatric clinical experience required.
