Position Summary

Overview:
Coordinate daily operations by assisting physicians, promoting development of others and demonstrating clinical expertise. Responsible for coordinating care of the patient and family.

Responsibilities:
Assess patients: collaborate with team to assist in the assessment of the patient/family throughout the peri-operative period; take calls for issues occurring after hours and on weekends; complete nursing assessment of the patient/family (biological, psychological, age appropriate developmental, environmental, cultural and spiritual); determine patient needs and priorities for care. Coordinate patient care: collaborate with team to develop a plan of care based upon the nursing assessment; implement and document plan of care, analyze situations, anticipate problems and take course of action; evaluate and document patient/family responses to care and identify changes and abnormal findings. Educate patients/families and identify interventions for parent/family experiencing anxiety and/or grief. Act as liaison between the Congenital Heart Surgery Service/Cath Lab and other institutions. Participate in continuing education of staff members by facilitating specialty in-services.

Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge gained from clinical expertise and experience in cardiology, ICU, post-operative care and congenital heart disease. Ability to operate all types of equipment and perform special procedures in the assigned nursing area; flexible to meet the needs of the personnel and unit on a 24-hour basis; demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills; be self-directed and organized; and demonstrate basic computer skills.

Education, Experience and Licensure:
Bachelor's or Associate;s degree in Nursing. Minimum of five (5) years experience in pediatric/neonatal nursing and three (3) years in cardiology/congenital hear surgery required. Texas nursing license required and PALS preferred.
