Position Summary

Overview:
Provide developmentally and age appropriate health maintenance for well children, episodic care for ill children and comprehensive care for children with chronic conditions. Assume independent and interdependent responsibilities in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of treatment and procedures. Responsible for education, consultation, research and evaluation of clinical practice at various levels.

Responsibilities:
Obtain a comprehensive health, developmental and family history on patients; assess the patient's physical status through the physical exam; differentiate between normal and abnormal findings; perform or recommend age-appropriate health screening procedures; provide health maintenance and health promotion; perform and evaluate diagnostic procedures and lab tests; analyze multiple sources of data and formulate a differential diagnosis in collaboration with physicians; follow established protocols to manage specific patient problems/care; formulate a plan of care in collaboration with other health care professionals and document the plan; evaluate responses to interventions and modify the plan of care; accurately present and document the data -- base, impression and plan of care; write accurate, legible orders that are co-signed by a physician. Collaborate with other members of the health care disciplines to provide comprehensive care to patients; utilize effective and appropriate interviewing skills to elicit information from patient and family and collaborate with them in the development of the plan of care; request consultation or initiate referral for specialized care. Serve as an educational resource for the patient and family, community and other health care professionals. Apply new knowledge, relevant to pediatric nursing, to clinical practice. Develop and update NP protocols specific to the pediatric specialty; explore and implement charges/reimbursements for services; participate in the ongoing development, review and evaluation of the NP role. Participate in, develop and coordinate at least one QI aspect of care, which shows improvement, related to patient outcome.

Knowledge and Skills:
Broad knowledge of nursing functions and medical terminology; adult learning principles and how to apply these principles to teaching required. The ability to operate all types of equipment and perform routine and special procedures used in the daily advanced nursing care of children; work effectively with others and demonstrate leadership qualities.

Education, Licensure and Experience:
Master's in nursing; Texas RN and NP license; national NP certification; authorization by the BNE to practice in the primary specialty role; a minimum of two (2) years experience in applied specialty.
